# Included states

> Stop Revenue Recovery calls and texts to contacts in the US states you choose.

Revenue Recovery calls and texts every state by default. **Included states** lets you turn
off outreach to specific US states, for every Revenue Recovery workflow at once.

<Note>
  This setting applies only to Revenue Recovery, your outreach to churned or lapsed
  members. It is separate from AI Calling's [Do Not Call list](/docs/ai-calling/do-not-call),
  which suppresses individual phone numbers across your outbound campaigns.
</Note>

## Where to find it

Open **Revenue Recovery → Workflows**. Near the top of the page sits a collapsed row
labeled **Included states**, marked **Optional**. Its summary line reads "All states
included" until you change it. Nobody has to open this row. Contacting every state is
the default, and the row confirms that rather than hiding it.

## Exclude a state

Click the row to expand it. hyzl lists all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Every
state starts checked, so hyzl still contacts people there.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Uncheck the states to exclude">
    Uncheck Maryland and New Jersey, for example, to stop outreach there. Use **Select
    all** or **Deselect all** to start from either end. The search box finds a state by
    name.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Decide unknown states">
    A switch decides what happens to a contact whose state hyzl cannot confirm. It is on
    by default. Turn it off to hold those contacts too, alongside your excluded states.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save**. hyzl confirms with "Calling regions updated" and collapses the row.
    The summary updates, for example "All states except Maryland, New Jersey."
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What happens to an excluded contact

A contact in an excluded state gets no Revenue Recovery outreach. That covers the
initial call, the heads-up text, every retry, and the win-back offer. hyzl sends no
win-back text and no win-back email, on either Stripe or RevenueCat. hyzl still
records them. Their [Activity log](/docs/revenue-recovery/analytics/activity-log)
row reads **Outside included states**, so an excluded contact stays visible instead of
disappearing from the count.

## How hyzl determines a state

hyzl reads a contact's state from their billing address when your provider (Stripe or
RevenueCat) has one on file. Otherwise hyzl infers it from the contact's phone area code.

<Note>
  The area code is a best guess, not a confirmed address. A contact who kept an old area
  code after moving, or a VoIP number, can resolve to the wrong state. When hyzl cannot
  determine a state at all, the unknown-state switch decides what happens to them.
